City Council is the governing body for the City of Hamilton, with sixteen members elected by the residents of Hamilton for a four-year term of office through the municipal election process. This includes the mayor and fifteen councillors representing each of the city's fifteen wards.
Council meetings ratify recommendations from the Standing Committees of Council. The City has six Standing Committees that offer policy and operational recommendations to City Council on an ongoing basis:
- Audit, Finance and Administration Committee
- Board of Health
- Emergency and Community Services Committee
- General Issues Committee
- Planning Committee
- Public Works Committee
