The Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT) is part of the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General. It delivers a range of services that safeguard the legal, personal, and financial interests of certain private individuals and estates and protects charitable property in Ontario.
Services include:
- making financial decisions for adults who have been found mentally incapable
- acting as Substitute Decision Maker of last resort to make substitute treatment or long-term care admission decisions for incapable individuals
- holding funds in trust for minors and plaintiffs and defendants involved in a lawsuit
- administering estates when no one else is available to do so
- protecting the public’s interest in charities and dissolved corporations
- providing other services to protect the financial, legal, and personal care of mentally incapable Ontarians
